Monotype's New Office Pays Tribute To 750 Different Fonts

Monotype's New Office Pays Tribute To 750 Different Fonts

Most of us can't get through a day without reading something in Helvetica or Times New Roman. Monotype, the global type foundry that controls those and many other iconic fonts, recently completed its new London office—and its products took on a very visible architectural role.

Ben Adams Architects designed the U.K. headquarters—one of 15 scattered across the world—with the firm's craft in mind. Inside the office, you're greeted with letters—lots and lots of letters. Along with selections of the firm's famous fonts, like Helvetica, Gill Sans, and Times New Roman, letters from Monotype's 20,000-font-strong archive dot its walls.

When employees and visitors enter the 3,500-square-foot Shoreditch office, they're welcomed by a giant letter "M," a motif which follows them around the office. Designed to flexibly fit 32 workstations as well as collaborative spaces, the office's central feature is a birch plywood tunnel etched with 1,500 different "M" logos in 750 different typefaces from the company's robust archives.

THREADLESS - CHICAGO

THREADLESS - CHICAGO

Staking its claim in one of the coolest locations in the West Loop, Threadless’s new home on the top floor of Morgan Manufacturing bares its artistic soul from the inside out. The Partners by Design team embraced the beautiful bones of the old industrial warehouse to ensure unobstructed views and a plethora of natural light. The shared workspace and group seating encourages collaboration between employees at every level, and the choice to construct no fixed offices emboldens communication and visioning amongst the newest hires, the company founders, and everyone in between. Honoring the creative mindset of both its workers and its customers, the office itself is a constantly-evolving blank canvas—from the DIY sticker-bombed bathroom to the Brian Killer commissioned roof deck water tower, the space is alive with a diversity of talent, including work from street artists like SickFisher, Elloo, Lauren Asta, and JunkYard.

While the new headquarters houses a variety of opportunities for creative production, with a photography studio, maker lab, and a proprietary fabric printing process, it also inspires mixed-used elements that transition seamlessly from work-day to after-hours. The reception desk doubles as a bar with four kinds of beer on tap, there’s a stage for bands and performance events that serves as a collaboration zone and work space during the day, and Threadless is able to actively engage their commitment to imagination and ingenuity by hosting events for neighborhood artists and the local creative community.

American Beverage Association Offices – Washington D.C.

American Beverage Association Offices – Washington D.C.

FOX Architects have designed new offices for the American Beverage Association, located in Washington D.C.

Having been in their original space for 40 years, American Beverage Association wanted a new space that reflected their iconic industry. Their former office consisted of smaller floor plates across multiple floors, with no conference areas to host events. This forced them to rent out hotel space, missing the opportunity to champion their culture.

The design team generated a parti-diagram along the ceiling plane which connected the space through color-changing LED lighting. Common materials used in the beverage industry were used as inspiration for their new space. The lifecycle of bottles and glass is captured in the elevator lobby with a lighted “bubble effect” made of recycled materials. As you step into the reception area, you are greeted by a colorful, lighted display of beverage container silhouettes. The café features a bottle cap backsplash and pendant lights made out of beverage containers.

PillPack Offices – Somerville

PillPack Offices – Somerville

Haley Mclane has designed the new offices of pharmaceutical company PillPack, located in Somerville, Massachusetts.

We wanted to move away from the sterile, abrasive aesthetic that is so common in startups. We completely gutted the existing build out, exposed the ceiling and polished the terrazzo concrete floors. One of the design challenges was lighting – the existing windows were small and widely spaced. Our solution was to focus on earth tones, muted colors, and warm lighting to compliment the dark hues.

Rather than adding loud pops of color, we focused on incorporating varieties of texture in the space. A Venetian plaster wall lies behind our vintage reception desk. Heavy plaid curtains add color to the custom made glass walls surrounding the conference rooms, while also providing privacy during meetings. We also incorporated locally sourced reclaimed wood in the kitchen.

Criteo’s Cool NYC Office

Criteo’s Cool NYC Office

Criteo, a Paris-based digital technology company that serves personalized online display advertisements to consumers on behalf of e-commerce companies, recently opened a new office in New York City.

“Criteo’s ultimate goal for its office relocation was to attract top professionals to the organization, as well as increase collaboration among employees. The firm desired an energizing and flexible office environment that tied into their brand story and is as engaging for their global firm’s staff as it is to their visitors. The design of the 40,000-square-foot space maximizes on the entire office footprint by providing a multitude of areas for work style options. As such, workspace choices include a completely open layout with open workstations, a robust coffee bar with lounge area, small and large private meeting rooms and arbitrary alcove seating. The office’s interconnecting staircase facilitates accessibility between departments, but also serves as an alternative meeting area. The overall design characteristic of Criteo’s office is reminiscent of hospitality/hotel environments, where the focus is on the ambiance that employees and visitors experience as they first enter and are greeted at reception, and continue to circulate throughout the space. ”, says HGA.
