The rooms at this hotel are inside Airstream trailers on the roof of the building

Created out of a need to fill the space at an urban rooftop car park, James Fry came up with Notel, a unique boutique hotel made of six vintage Airstreams in an up and coming part of Melbourne, Australia.

Each Airstream was gutted and redesigned by Edwards Moore ArchitectsFMSA Architecture and artist Ash Keating.

Keating was also responsible for the painted wall behind the trailers. He used pressurized fire extinguishers full of paint to create the massive installation in colors that compliment those used throughout the interiors of the air streams.

Gow Hastings’ Revitalized Ryerson Student Hub

Gow Hastings’ Revitalized Ryerson Student Hub

Ryerson’s ServiceHub, which replaces a dingy Brutalist cafeteria, consolidates all the university’s administrative functions in a bright, airy and organized core.

When local firm Gow Hastings Architects was asked to update an underused cafeteria inside a building on Toronto’s Ryerson University campus, they knew they had to begin with a clean slate. The 1,210-square-metre space, like the 1970s Brutalist it occupied, was dark, heavy, and dated-looking – not to mention ill-equipped to handle the needs of the university’s ever-growing student body.

Today, the space is unrecognizable. The new ServiceHub combines all the administrative needs of student registration and financial services into a single “one-stop shopping” location, which is also the students’ first point of contact with the university. And while the function of the space has been transformed, so has the look: gone is the oppressive grey concrete, replaced with an airy, dynamic and welcoming space more on-brand with Ryerson’s position as a leading Canadian institution.

PagerDuty Offices – San Francisco

PagerDuty Offices – San Francisco

Studio Sarah Willmer Architecture has developed the new offices of tech company PagerDuty located in San Francisco’s Design District. We first looked at the previous office space in back in 2014.

While there is serious work happening at Pagerduty, an incident management solution that integrates with IT monitoring tools, their new home expresses the growing firm’s energy through splashes of color in glass enclosed meeting and community rooms. Transparency plays a role in the office structure where staff and executives coexist in the large workspace. New height adjustable workbenches, with extra elbowroom for executives, provide employees flexibility and comfort. Pagerduty’s energy is expressed through its signature green, which accents the project, a brilliant contrast to the buildings concrete waffle structure.

Warner Music Hong Kong Headquarters

Warner Music Hong Kong Headquarters

Bean Buro has developed the new headquarters offices of Warner Music located in Hong Kong.

Inspired by the company’s rich music heritage, design palette incorporates classic materials, such as timber, natural leather, textile fabrics and brushed bronze finishes. The architectural surfaces are kept clean with subtle details, including metal trims and leather handles, complemented by a mixture of Asian and European furniture.

The design inhabits the top floor of an office building, with views across the bay to Hong Kong Island. The challenge was to maintain the openness of the space – maximising views, while creating a comfortable and inhabitable environment that would support both local artists and Warner Music staff by improving interactions across the company.

align has recently completed the design of a new office for technology company Mendeley located in London.

Reception: Visitors first arrive at the third floor level into a lift lobby area, which is bordered to the right and the left by two sets of glass doors, decorated with the Elsevier white tree logo. These came from Elsevier’s existing image library, but were selected by align to work specifically with the space and the overall colour scheme.

The Gray, Chicago, USA

The Gray, Chicago, USA

Nobody could ever accuse the Kimpton group of not throwing its weight behind Chicago. Located in the former New York Life Insurance Building – now practically dwarfed by the surrounding skyscrapers – the newly opened The Gray is the San Francisco-based outfit’s fifth property in the Windy City, and the eighth in the Midwest alone.

Interior designers Beleco have been respectful in its reimagining of William le Baron Jenney’s 1894 pile. While the brick and terracotta façade retains its elegant symmetry, the interiors pay subtle homages to Chicago, past and present – the blues in each of the 293 guestrooms hint of the city’s flag, the public spaces are sprinkled with artwork by local artists, and the original Georgia Gray marble in the lobby still glimmers.

A Look Inside Dropbox’s Super Cool Austin Office

A Look Inside Dropbox’s Super Cool Austin Office

Dropbox, a popular technology company that provides secure file sharing and storage solutions allowing people to access, share, and collaborate on their files, recently reached out interior architecture firm lauckgroup to design their new offices in the heart of Austin, Texas.

“Our team collaborated with the client to cultivate a design that captures the company’s creative energy and high level of design detail. The design is purposeful in its gestures and the architectural language is consistent across the 3 levels; detailing, finish palette, and lighting. Hot-rolled steel was used as a high contrast material in the space and can be first seen in the elevator lobby steel slats which create pattern and contrast to the warmth of the Walnut wood reception desk. In the adjacent space, the breakroom has a continuation of these slats forms which are reinterpreted in wood as horizontal elements creating a bench and bar-height seating for a warm, rustic lodge feel. These materials and architectural shapes appear reinterpretations throughout key areas of the space. The team was challenged to develop a unique treatment for the workspace that allowed flexibility and power solutions throughout the open area. As a result, the project architect worked closely with the client to develop a custom steel trellis power system to the workstations. This offers each person and team the flexibility and freedom to reconfigure their desk to best suit their work style. In the open office, screens and openings allow for a sense of transparency, while maintaining spaces for a creative getaway. The 5th floor features a visually interesting cafe and rooftop terrace with a variety of seating options and a platform for an all-hands gathering. The design team aimed to ensure that each design detail fit well with Dropbox’s company culture”, says lauckgroup

Garcia Tamjidi Architecture Design has designed the offices of the The Parker Foundation/Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy located in San Francisco’s Presidio.

For 5,000 square feet of temporary office space for the Parker Foundation, we focused on how we could create crisply ethereal and solidly workable modernism out of subtle interventions: resurfacing walls and floors, installing simple drywall, adapting existing dividing walls to create conference rooms and offices, re-using track lighting, introducing thoughtful furniture solutions, and designing and producing built-in millwork that will retain its usefulness long after the offices have moved.
