There are so many workplace inventions that it can be difficult to keep track of them all. That's why Stephen invented this segment.

Anytime a designer is looking to get something crowdfunded for 18 grand and winds up with a nearly quarter mil, they have our attention. And we like sharing these things here to inspire you design entrepreneurs with success stories.
We love this question! We never set out to create a standing desk, we just had a need. We are both deeply committed to health – eat well, exercise every day – but had no way to carry that commitment into the office. Like you probably have done, we looked everywhere to find the perfect standing desk, but nothing on the market fit our current office setups. We needed a solution.
Then we realized, the window is the highlight of any office, yet for some reason the majority of office desks (including our own) face the wall. Not only is this detrimental to productivity, it is also detrimental to your health. We were determined to solve the problem of stagnant, wall-facing, seated desks. DeskView gives you both mobility and the opportunity to have the best view in the office.
It’s not often that you’re told to imagine what the wedding registry of Charles Eames and Judy Jetson would be like. But that’s just how engineering and design firm RockPaperRobot describes its work and credo. Aspiring to create furnishings that are at once aesthetically handsome, functional and robotics inspired, RockPaperRobot has, to date, conceived and developed pieces that seem to defy the laws of physics. Take, for instance, its Float Table, which cleverly uses magnetized components and tensile steel cables to make the table’s wooden cubes appear to float. The firm’s latest endeavor, the Ollie Chair, is equally inventive and smart — and coming soon to Kickstarter.
We all experience this before trying to find a surface to use a laptop or tablet in a crowed airport or public places. Enblue Technology, a leader in premium power solutions for mobile devices, challenge Bluemap Design to find an innovative solution.
We realized that travelers already have a great weighted desk base with them all the time, the luggage itself. SMARTOO is a foldable desk which clamp onto the pull up handle of any luggage and turns it into a mobile working desk. It is compact and made of engineering plastic that is light weight yet strong enough to hold up a 15” laptop or any device in between. It has a removable 4,200 mAh power bank that can charge laptop and mobile devices. SMARTOO will change the way we work when traveling. It debuted in CES 2017 with overwhelming interest. We will launch a Kickstarter campaign soon.
While some of the fixed-height ones are handsome, the problem with them is obvious: We're all different heights and require eyelines at different levels. The issue with the adjustable-height models is the inelegance/fiddliness of their mechanisms. Industrial designer Matt Cramsie set a tall order for himself: To design a good-looking, portable, height-adjustable laptop stand with good UX, i.e. an elegant adjustment mechanism. Together with business partner Anhtai Anhtuan he developed the Tiny Tower, which was a year and a half in the making.
We may have reached Peak Standing Desk, but that doesn't mean that people will stop dreaming up slightly new iterations of them any time soon. And that's a good thing too, when they’re as beautifully designed as the OPLØFT, a clean-lined mini-desk that sits on top of any regular desk and renders it adjustable.
Home goods retailer SWENYO collaborated with designer Ben Uyeda of HomeMade Modern to design a versatile metal bracket that can create an infinite combination of furniture—all using the ubiquitous wood 2x4. Read through to learn about their Kickstarter campaign to make it happen!
SWENYO and Uyeda are raising $20,000 on Kickstarter to pay for the production tools that would make the UX4 system possible. A pledge of just $45 will get you one UX4 Bracket Kit—future retail value: $75—that includes four brackets and all the necessary hardware and instructions. Bigger packages include more goodies, like other furniture from SWENYO and brackets in more colors!

Much of the furniture we use—chairs, tables, desks, dressers—has been in existence in some form for centuries or millenia. So it's always exciting to see someone attempting to create furniture with a new form factor in an attempt to meet modern-day needs that would have stymied our design ancestors.
