Developers at Staples  SPLS -0.97%  are working to make the button much more useful by connecting it to back end services that will let business customers place their office supply orders and, eventually, check on order status via voice command, according to sources at the office supply retailer. Further down the line, the same back end systems will be able to handle orders sent by text message or email as well, said sources close to the project.

FTC Rejects Staples-Office Depot Deal Without a Counteroffer

Staples Inc. will have to do more to smooth government opposition to its proposed takeover of Office Depot Inc. after the U.S. rejected its latest attempt to win antitrust approval.

Staples offered to transfer commercial contracts worth up to $1.25 billion, up from $500 million previously, but still failed to sway antitrust officials, the company said in a statement Monday.

FTC challenges Staples-Office Depot deal

The Federal Trade Commission Monday filed an administrative complaint challenging office-supplies giant Staples' (SPLS) proposed $6.3 billion acquisition of top rival Office Depot (ODP).

The deal between Framingham, Mass.-based Staples and Boca Raton, Fla.-headquartered Office Depot — the only U.S. office-supply companies with national reach and the sector's top two chains — would significantly reduce national competition in the market for office supplies sold to large business customers, the FTC said.
