In one way at least, the future of office design most closely resembles its past. For over a century, designers, carpenters, engineers, graphic designers and at least one sculptor, based in factories and studios in and around the otherwise perfectly unremarkable city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, have devised, produced and exported the environment in which many of us spend our daily lives. First they proselytised in Chicago, then throughout the US, before heading overseas. So successfully have they done this that in 2014, the three Michigan office furniture giants, Haworth, Herman Miller and Steelcase, had combined sales of almost $6.7bn in 26 countries.
Wilkhahn Project News: Loft Offices – For Less Deskbound Workflows and More Engagement
High ceilings, open-plan layouts and light-flooded rooms have transformed previously practical but dull inner-city workspaces. This change has caused a real boom in loft architecture in international cities. But even in smaller and medium-sized towns conversions of old factory facilities into offices or residential units are also popular. A company called Wortmann from Detmold in Germany has shown that even a virtually windowless warehouse, never designed to accommodate people, can be remodeled to become a light-filled office.
What the Future of Working at Home May Look Like
More than half the businesses registered in the U.S. are now home-based. But few homes are designed and built to accommodate them. Most contemporary housing is designed solely as living space, without the demands of work in mind. People who work out of their homes are left trying to resolve conflicting needs in a single space: a business that’s open to clients on the same site as a private living area; a noisy workspace in proximity to places where the family needs to study, relax and have down time; potentially dangerous work processes in a place that needs to be safe.

The Office Space Isn't Dead, It's Making A Comeback
Over the past few years there have been many discussions around the death and disappearance of the office. Most believed that with co-working locations, the spread of Wi-Fi and mobility, and the rise of co-working locations that there would be no need for an office anymore. We would all work from anywhere and everywhere and this was of course a fair and reasonable prediction. But, it’s not entirely true. Our traditional idea of an office is in fact disappearing, that is the row of cubicles lined in a building that looks and smells like a hospital but the office itself is far from dead!

This Work Pod Will Help You Focus Like Never Before
I'm sitting in a private work pod right now. The day is a bit dreary here in Minnesota but I have a task lamp pointed toward my keyboard. It's helping my disposition a bit. I have my feet propped up on a small blue ottoman and I'm listening to the new album by Grimes. There's a thin plastic shield surrounding me that looks exactly like something out of Star Trek. The pod is called the Steelcase Brody, and it's a wonder of workplace engineering.

Coming to Our Senses: How Ergonomics Applies to Office Environments and Productivity
Mention ergonomics and most people think of posture — specifically, sitting at work, which a recent survey found 86 percent of U.S. workers must do. Between commuting, desk jobs and lounging at home, Americans sit an average of 7.7 hours a day. The computer age has brought us keyboard trays and wrist rests for carpal tunnel syndrome.
