Supreme remixes Aalto’s iconic Tank chair for new collection

Ultimate streetwear brand Supreme is reaching deeper into the design world in a second collaboration with Finnish furniture company Artek. Earlier this year, Supreme remixed the iconic Stool 60 by architect, designer, and Artek founder Alvar Aalto. Now, it’s launching its own version of Aalto’s 400 Tank chair, complete with a bit of cool-kid irreverence.

Supreme’s take on the armchair is not as simple as slapping on its red-and-white logo—though doing just that to New York City Metrocards already caused quite the frenzy. But it is very red in custom jacquard fabric for the cushioned seat and backrest. The pattern? Just a popular four-letter word repeated over and over, with one of the letters tilted as a nod to pop artist Robert Indiana’s famous “Love” design. How’s that for edgy furniture?

Originally introduced in 1936 and now in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, the Tank chair is one of Aalto’s classic designs showcasing the potential of bent plywood. Its current price hovers just over $5,000. There’s no word yet on how much the Supreme version will cost, but the brand’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection—of which this piece is a part of—releases online on August 24.
