Tom Marquardt Joins HOK’s Chicago Practice as Director of Interiors

As vice president and director of interiors, Marquardt will engage HOK’s clients and project teams to explore dynamic design solutions.

“Tom brings tremendous design skills, thought leadership and energy to our Chicago practice,” said Riccardo Mascia, AIA, LEED AP, managing principal for HOK in Chicago. “He will enhance our ability to create the best interior environments for our clients and the people who occupy the spaces we design.”

Marquardt joins HOK from HDR’s Chicago office, where he was a design principal. Prior to that, he established and led his own design studio, marquardt+, for nearly 30 years. This Chicago-based design and branded environments studio served clients spanning the corporate, commercial, retail, educational, residential, institutional and nonprofit sectors.

“I was drawn to HOK by its focus on experience-centered thinking, which resonates with my interest in creating client-focused design solutions,” said Marquardt. “HOK is known for its personalization of the design process tailored to each client’s individual needs for outcomes that surpass their expectations. I’m excited to be part of this dynamic Chicago practice, which has access to HOK’s global resources, and to work with its great clients.”

Marquardt has taught branded environments and portfolio classes at Chicago’s Harrington College of Design and presented on design thought leadership at venues including NeoCon. He holds leadership positions in a variety organizations and committees, including the Executive Circle of the American Marketing Association and Interiors + Sources magazine’s editorial board. Marquardt earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design, with triple sub-majors in graphic, industrial and interior design from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

This year he will receive the International Interior Design Association (IIDA)’s Leadership Honor of Excellence award for his contributions to the design industry.
