Anamorphic Logo: Reception desk at Lightspeed_acdf architecture
Place Viger in Montreal symbolized an age of glamorous travel and cosmopolitan ambition. Constructed in 1898, the train station was done up like a French chateau. But time wasn't kind to the building and over the decades, it fell into disrepair (thanks, Great Depression). Today it's the site of a $250-million mixed-use redevelopment project that seeks to revive the abandoned structure. Lightspeed, a point-of-sale software company, is one of the newest tenants and it enlisted local firm ACDF Architecture to overhaul three floors within Place Viger for its global headquarters. The concept mixes punchy graphics, whimsical features, and an historic framework to forge a minimalist office that feels sophisticated, not overwrought.

From Scrap to Sustainable: A quality solution
Television shows such as “Fixer Upper” “Property Brothers” and “Antiques Roadshow” attract millions of viewers by showing us how one person’s trash can become another person’s treasure. Beauty isn’t always easy to spot. Sometimes it’s hidden under layers of dust, often in need of a good coat of paint. Other times it can be found right under our feet — simply in need of someone to look down and see the promise in what otherwise would be thrown away.
Recently, three hidden gems shined. They show us how simple scraps of wood or cloth can be reimagined to create authentic, original and inspiring spaces. Scrap is the excess material from the manufacturing process that might otherwise have been discarded or recycled. People who led these projects saw the beauty in this previously unused material. Instead of seeking out perfection, they realized it’s the imperfections that can inspire us.

Rockwell Unscripted for Knoll
When Knoll was looking for a design partner to collaborate on a collection of furniture that suited modern work styles and environments "there was only one person to call, and that was David Rockwell," says Benjamin Pardo, Knoll's Creative Director. Two very different sensibilities that may at first not seem like the most obvious partnership leverage the design firm's expertise in theater, play, co-working and hospitality with the furniture company's impeccable craftsmanship and creative freedom. The result is Rockwell Unscripted, a collection that fits in between the more traditional working and meeting spaces in most offices. It's a surprisingly successful, improvisational and flexible collection of seating, borders, storage, tables, steps and accessories. David Rockwell, who had won the company's first Tony award for set design the same week as the Rockwell Unscripted Collection for Knoll launched, shares his thoughts about the collaboration.

Whether that environment is a small reading nook or a sweeping botanical garden, these spaces give people permission to work as they see fit. And in doing so, people reach their potential, cascading greater good to others and our planet. That’s a lot to be positive about.
