Wellness in the Workplace Is Addressed at Exclusive Event Co-Hosted by IMA International Executive Committee and Tangram

The International Executive Committee of the Internet Marketing Association and Tangram co-hosted an intimate gathering on Thurs., July 19, 2018, on “The Cost of Waiving Wellness: Building Health and Wellbeing into Workplace Design.” The event took place at the home of Sonya and Joe Lozowski, Tangram CEO and President, in Crystal Cove overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Nick Payzant, founder and CEO of Cerna Healthcare, delivered an overview of the county’s aging population and the need to plan and save for maintaining health over the long term. He also covered the importance of physical movement in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and stroke. He noted that people spend most of their time at work, but it can be the least healthy environment they encounter.

Sharing their insights based on extensive workplace research by Steelcase were Mary Butman, Workplace Consultant, and Mark Chaput, Regional Sales Manager. Butman outlined three fundamental aspects of wellbeing at work: physical, cognitive and emotional, concluding with the question, “Do you feel better when you leave work than you did when you arrived?” Chaput discussed five key work modes around focus, collaboration, change, social and rejuvenation.

Sajjad Syed, M.D. and pathologist with Kaiser Permanente addressed wellness best practices and described a concept called “choice and control” that recommends not eating for four hours before bedtime, taking the next meal at least 12 hours later, monitoring sleep patterns, maintaining gut health and exercising.

Michael Matuz, founder of First Step Fitness, discussed becoming a “business athlete” and how to gain a competitive edge. Also addressing the group was John Cain, Principal of the CAIN Group at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, who talked about the Crystal Cove community and real estate trends in Orange County.

Workspaces have a significant yet often unseen impact on mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. These environments are being transformed through innovations in design thinking, ergonomic furniture and technology integration. The results include healthier and happier employees, a more motivated and productive workforce, and reductions in absenteeism.
